Red Devils defeated in Winter Fest ClassicFriday 21, August 2015 - Red Devils
In what had been dubbed "the game of the season" so far, the Canterbury Red Devils fell just short in overtime 2-1 against league leaders the Southern Stampede.
The first 20 minutes was a feeling out process for both teams with limited shots and scoring chances.
It took over a period for the first goal of the game to be scored; a power play tally for Nic Kuqali off a one timer set up by a great pass from Slovenian Igor Cvetek. This would be the only time that the Red Devils would penetrate the defence of the stampede. The Stampede tied the game at 1 a piece towards the end of the 2nd stanza.
The 3rd period stared with the score tied at 1.The Red Devils would use their speed and finesse to generate several opportunities but could not capitalize. Both teams had chances to go 1 up in the 3rd but both goalies were brick walls.
Overtime was a similar story, the Devils generated a few good scoring chances but again, could not capitalize. The game ended when a Stampede player found himself alone in front of Coleman and made no mistake in burying the puck.
This game was not your typical Nzihl goal fest we have become accustom to seeing. Both teams played admirable defence which was backed up from very strong play from both goalies.
Red Devils player of the game was goaltender Mikey Coleman who saved 37 out of 39 shots on net!
